The difference between genetics and genomics

Genetics and genomics both study DNA, with genetics focusing on individual genes and heredity, while genomics addresses the entire genome and gene interactions. You can read more about these definitions through the National Human Genome Research Institute
Key Differences
  • Scope: Genetics studies single genes or specific groups of genes; genomics studies all genes combined (the genome) and non-coding DNA. 
  • Focus: Genetics looks at how traits and single-gene diseases are inherited; genomics looks at complex multi-gene interactions and environmental influences. 
  • Methods: Genetics uses family history and targeted gene tests; genomics uses high-performance computing, mapping, and large-scale sequencing.
